Did You Know That Massage Lotions and Creams Can Damage Your Skin?

What would you say if I told you that massage lotions and creams can mess up your skin?

I remember when I worked in a spa and we were using a massage cream from the top company in the industry. After using the cream on 3-5 clients a day for a week, I noticed my skin was getting dry. My cuticles and the skin on my fingertips were peeling. I remember this happening to me when I was in massage school and I used the same brand of product.

I never had this problem when using massage oil, so I chalked it up to a possible allergic reaction to something in the cream. I switched to a different kind of cream, with different ingredients, and I still had the same problem.

The Truth About Emulsifiers

This shouldn’t be happening because massage oils and creams are fairly simple. Most massage oils are one single oil, or a combination of oils (like jojoba, almond, grapeseed, etc). What I didn’t know at the time is that creams and lotions are usually a mix of oils with water and emulsifiers (substances that allow the oil and water molecules to mix). Many emulsifiers can cause the skin to dry out because they can disrupt the protective skin barrier and can draw water from the skin to mix with the oils in the cream after the water in the cream evaporates.

Once I learned this information, I decided against using massage creams in Happy Cat Pain Relief. What I apply to my clients' skin, my body also takes in. I want to use the best products for my client’s benefit and my own.

What Massage Oils Do I Use?

When I decided I would start Happy Cat, what products I would use was an easy choice. Earlier this year I accepted a remote job with a natural skincare company called Ora's Amazing Herbal. The founder, who is a nutritionist that graduated from Bastyr University, developed a line of skincare products to help her daughter heal from eczema. Upon hiring, they sent me a box with every product they manufactured so I could try it out for myself.

Let me tell you, I have always been blessed with soft skin (thanks mom!). Since using Ora’s my skin is even SOFTER! My face feels smoother. I get comments and reviews from customers on a daily basis about how Ora’s Amazing Herbal has transformed their skin. I knew I had to use her body oils for my massage clients.

What makes Ora’s effective? She combines a base oil (that is made up of grapeseed oil infused with various herbs that have anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antimicrobial properties, high antioxidant levels, and promote natural ceramide production and cellular healing) with other healing herbs and oils. The products that are fragranced contain only naturally derived fragrances and essential oils.

Ora's also makes a CBD balm that is out of this world! Hemp Soothe Salve has the same base oil as her other products and essential oils of cardamom, geranium, spearmint, peppermint, and frankincense. Although it contains peppermint and spearmint essential oils, it does not smell minty, nor is it irritating to the skin. It contains 150 mg of CBD in the 1 oz jar and 600 mg in the 4 oz jar.

You can order her Hemp Soothe Salve at this link. Use my code HAPPYCATCBD for 10% discount off your first purchase. For non-CBD orders from Ora's Amazing Herbal, you can use the discount code HAPPYCAT to get 10% off your first order.

These products not only hydrate your skin but also nourish it. It’s something that I feel good about using on my skin for 5+ hours a day. I hope that you will notice a difference too when you come to Happy Cat Pain Relief for your massage.
